Spring is my favorite time of year.

The afternoon sun floods my living room and studio, and the jacaranda trees outside the window are covered with flowers.

It requires greater courage to preserve inner freedom, to move on in one’s inward journey into new realms, than to stand defiantly for outer freedom. It is often easier to play the martyr, as it is to be rash in battle. Strange as it sounds, steady, patient growth in freedom is probably the most difficult task of all, requiring the greatest courage. Thus if the term “hero” is used in this discussion at all, it must refer not to the special acts of outstanding persons, but to the heroic element potentially in every (hu)man.

Requiere de mayor valentía preservar la libertad interior, avanzar en el viaje interno hacia nuevos espacios, que defender desafiante la libertad exterior. A menudo es más fácil jugar al mártir, como lo es ser impulsivo en la batalla. Por extraño que parezca, el crecimiento constante y paciente de la libertad es probablemente la tarea más difícil de todas, y requiere el mayor coraje. In this new series, I pay homage to ancient scripts. Their simplicity –and the meaning they carry (which most of us can’t understand)– has always moved me.

One of these rings may well depict a quote by Aulus Cornelius Celsus:

“Live in rooms full of light. Avoid heavy food. Be moderate in the drinking of wine. Take massage, baths, exercise, and gymnastics. Fight insomnia with gentle rocking or the sound of running water. Change surroundings and take long journeys. Strictly avoid frightening ideas. Indulge in cheerful conversation and amusements. Listen to music."
